In this chapter, "Basics," I will describe the main fundamentals which are crucial for becoming a comic book writer and artist.
A comic book writer is both a scriptwriter and a cartoonist. The comic book writer is an artist, which means, as I explain it in the chapter "The Artist," the comic book writer is doing a creative process; He is creating something new and unique from elements and forms that already exist. This creation in comics is a combination of texts and images. One of the main fundamental for becoming a comic book writer is to tell a story by combining text and images.
If the comic writer/cartoonist knows exactly what he wants to tell and which images he wants to create, then the storytelling and the Drawings are just a "formality."
So one of the most important basics for working as a comic writer is the script and the story. The drawings, on the other hand, play only a secondary role. If the script and the story has not solid fundamentals (such as a well-constructed and interesting story ), no matter how good the drawings are, the comic will not be interesting for the reader. It is a well-constructed and interesting story, above all, that makes the quality of a comic. The drawings may be good; if the content and story of the comic is not coherent and interesting for the reader, then the comic will have a poor quality.
On the other hand, a good drawing can be very attractive, a good drawing is a "plus" that the reader may appreciate. A good drawing combined with a solid plot may be increase the sales of the comic.
When I first started developing comics, I did the mistake to focuse too much on the drawings. The drawings can be important, but the ideas and the story are the most important. So to become a comic book writer and cartoonist, you have to invest time primarily in editing the story and developing ideas. In fact, drawing is just a tool. Being a good comic book writer doesn't necessarily mean being a good drawer; being a good comic book writer means, first, have the hability to tell a good story in form of images and text.
For me, the job of a comic book writer means mainly being creative and developing ideas. Before putting it on paper, i do some kind pf visualization through meditation . So, in this way, I usually know in advance what I want to tell; through inner visualization, I know the texts and most of the images in advance and know what images I want to include in the texts.
A comic book writer has to be multi-talented. He has to be creative, but he also has to be good in writing and storytelling. Mastering the drawing is also important ( but not absolutely necessary ), if the comic Writer wants to increase the sales of his work.
Comics are a special form of storytelling, comics are not novels or picture stories, and comic writing and comic drawing is mastering the "space between the panels".
There is an empty space between each Panel of the comic. The narrative and the storytelling in a comic consists of managing the space between the panels.
Dealing with the space between the panels is an important fundamental in comic writing.
The activity of a comic book author is a special form of art. If someone wants to develop a comic in a "professionnal" way, he must be able to learn and master several talents at the same time.
It is important to mention that I didn't become a comic writer overnight. Being a comic writer is a long process that requires patience and also a certain maturity. In general, most well-known comic writers have achieved success only after years of work and practicing the storytelling and the comicdrawing. Many "complete" comic writers mastering the drawing, the scripting and the storytelling only reached a certain maturity at the age of fourty or fourty-five in there middle of their life. As for me, I decided to start writing comics about ten years ago (13 years ago to be exact), and it's only been in the last three or four years that I have developed a comic with solid fundamentals. The drawings and story of my comic became a certain maturity only over the years. In fact, becoming a comic book writer is really a big "marathon."
It was very hard for me to find my way as a comic book writer, largely due to a lack of informations about the comic book writing profession. It is not easy to find the informations about the "right way" and the right methods to become a successfull comic writer. There is rather a disinformation in many comic lessons that you will find in the web, in many comic lessons, some Informations are not said or not mentioned. For example, for years I believed that creating a comic consists in drawing a comic. That is not true; drawing is part of the activity, but it is not the most important thing. It is
the storytelling that is an essential fundamental for comicwriting.
So, I hope that with the informations I am publishing here on this website, I can prevent "beginning" comic creators many difficulties and obstacles.
