In this part "The Story Telling", I will try to describe the right way to develop a good script and a good story.
The activity of storytelling is very different from the activity of drawing. The comicwriter must be able to master writing and storytelling in comic form. The comicwriter has to find the inspiration and the ideas.
For the development of the script and the story, the comicwriter has to go through a creative process.
THE COMICWRITER'S INTENTION/THE COMICWRITER´S MOTIVATION.
As a first step, I would like to speak about the intention and the motivation of the comicwriter, when he wants to create a comic.
As far as i am concerned, my main motivation by creating a comic, was to tell about a story. When I started my activity as a comicwriter, I do not had the hope to reach a large audience with my comic book. What I wanted first, is to narrate a story to myself. In fact, the first reader of a comic is the comic book writer himself. My first intention was to tell and develop a story with elements inspired from my own life. So the elements of my comicstory were inspired from dreams that I had at night, dreams which had a great influence for myself and my beliefs. However, in the narrative of my comic, there were also elements inspired from my spiritual crisis that i had in the first years of my adulthood. Through the narrative of the comicstory, I hoped to practice a kind of "therapy" or "self-therapy". So my intention in writing and developing a comic was primarily to put into paper my experience from the past and childhood dreams.
First of all, the comicwriter has to be sure about his motivation and intention, when he writes and draws the comic . So the comicwriter must ask himself: Why do I want to be a comic book writer, what is my motivation? What is my goal, what is my main intention, when I write a comic?
Comicwriters are usually motivated by telling stories and sharing them to others.
Over time and over the years, my intention and motivation by writing comics have changed a little bit. Since a couple of years, my real intention by writing comics is to give the reader through the comicstory a different view of a spiritual and material world. So my intention with comicwriting is more to "help" other people to find their own inner healing path by seeing the world with different eyes.
IDEAS AND INFORMATIONs
One of the fundamentals in comicwriting is to find new ideas. The comicwriter must ask himself, what does he want to tell in the comicstory. Therefore, the comicwriter usually must seek and search the informations; he has to document himself about the narrative of the story. Documentation and information gathering is a crucial step in the development of the script and the story.
The comicwriter must ask himself:
- what is the set and the plot of the story? Where and when does the story take place?
- Who are the heroes of the story? What are the character traits ? Are there any enemies? And if so, which role play the enemies in the story and how the heroes and the enemies interact??
- Is there a turning point in the story?
- How does the story begin? How has the world and the characters to be introduced? How are the heroes and the enemies portrayed?
- What are the jobs and tasks of the heroes?
These are questions that a comicwriter should ask himself.
I also would like to mention that the choice of the world, the settings, the character traits, the heroes and enemies largely depend on the comicwriter's affinities and preferences.
As for me, I write the comic mainly for myself, even though my ultimate intention is to put into the story some hints about a different point of view of a spiritual and material world. Since I have always been a big fan of Heroic Fantasy, stories and legends about Christmas, it was natural for me to put Santa Claus, the Christmas Goblins and Servant Ruprecht and so on... into my comic story.
Once the information is gathered, the comicwriter has to filter all the informations. At the beginning, you have a lot of ideas, but you can't put all of them into the story. As a comicwriter, it is important not to get lost in details. The comicwriter must have a common thread, he must know what he wants to tell, he must know the directions. In fact, the script and the story must be simple and clear. As a rule, when the comicwriter is gathering informations, he must also be able to follow his intuition in the creative process.
THE NARRATION.
Once the informations has been filtered and the writer knows what he wants to tell, he can start writing the story.
At the beginning, I tried many times to write and rewrite the story. In the process of writing the comic, I let my friends read the story several times. What I've often noticed, is that, in quite a few cases, the reader understands the story quite differently than the author does. For the author, the story may be logical, but the reader may understand the story completely differently. So, in case of missunderstanding of the reader, the original intention of the author could be missed. So, in the process of writing the story, missunderstandings between the reader and the author may happened: What seems logical to the author is not necessarily logical for the reader. So, it is important for the comic writer to let others read his stories, usually they also have a critical point of view and can have more distance to the story.
Also the space between the panels in the comic plays an essential part in developing the comic. A comic writer has to master what's between the panels, the space between the images. The panels with the text and the images communicate a message at a time "T", but on the other hand, the empty space between the panels also communicate something. That means that, when creating the comic, the comicwriter must not only be the master in writing the text, but also be the master in managing and dealing with the empty spaces between the panels.
At the beginning, during the creative process, I tended to include too much text in the story. In case of too much text, it is difficult for the reader to read and understand the story.
So the story has to be simple and clear. It is important that the comicwriter does not get lost in details in the process of writing. Sometimes, only one or two sentences may explain many elements of the plot. At the beginning, I did the mistake to repeat contents in the text; I wanted to explain "too well", most of the time, the pictures are enough to explain a main part of the story .
SUMMARY
The development of the script and the story can be very complex; on this website, I will not go into details on how to develop the script and the story. Here, I would like to notice that the comicwriter must be free in his choices that he is making in the creative process. In absolute terms, the choices made by the comicauthor shoud not depend on the readers likes or dislikes, also the choices shoud not depend on the comic sales and should also not depend on the fact, if the comic finds a wide audience. What really matters is, that the comicwriter is statisfied with the story and the plot of the comic. If some readers may not like the story of the comic book, at the end, that is not so important. What matters is the satisfaction of the comicwriter by developing the script and the story. What I mean is that the decisions and choices of the comicwriter should not depend on the approval of others. The comicwriter is, first of all, an artist that is working for himself.
There is no "right way" to write a comicstory. I would say that the "rightway" is that the comicwriter is enjoying writing and storytelling.
If there should be a "right way", then the comicwriter should follow this few steps in the creative process:
- First of all, seeking and gathering information and then the comicauthor has to filter the informations.
- mastering the art of writing, mastering the text and mastering the space between the panels.
- let other people reading the script and the comic story ( even from professionals ) and learning from the critical point of view of other people.
Finally, there is one important point that I have not mentioned yet and that is, by far, the most important point: the power of the now or the power of the present moment. The power of the present moment ("meditation", sports, yoga, dance...) is the "key" to achieve success in storytelling .
The power of the present is a great tool:
- in the creative process
- to filter ideas and informations
- to follow and listen to one's intuition
- and finally, to have a lot of joy and fun in the activity as a comicwriter.
The present moment is such an important point that I have specially dedicated a whole chapter to this topic (see chapter "The Power of Now").
